Online Music Lessons: Parents Can Easily Help

We hope all Music Notes students and parents are doing well through COVID-19. Since students are home from school and we are teaching online, we want to help our parents ease the burden of online music lessons.

Everyone has more time at home right now. Playing music can help fill the void, especially with the loss of other activities. Playing music and singing can provide a sense of purpose, control and accomplishment.

Aiming to practice music at home, on a regular schedule will offer your child routine and allow for additional musical growth.

Set aside time each day that will be “music time”. Post a schedule on your refrigerator or in your child’s bedroom. Students can have a normal routine away from tablets, phones and computers. Practice and continuance is more likely to happen if it takes place during the same time each day. Practice in the morning, as students are more alert.

Try to be present during your child’s practice time. Listen. Be in the adjacent room. Younger students will typically need help and parents can do this. Help with organizing learning materials, reading assignments, helping with note spelling and music theory. Have your morning coffee and listen to your son or daughter play music. This can be a break from reality and offer additional bonding time with children.

Be encouraging and positive about the learning and practicing process. Small victories and even playing music that is already learned, is a great way to keep the playing going and offer students positivity in their day, with a sense of normalcy.

Provide reasons to practice and play music (even while it may feel like there are none). Students can play for family members through live video and recorded video. Students can set-up the living room for a house concert. Students can think about recitals, concerts and festivals that will return once we are back to normal. Students can really gain some great strides now, while being at home.

Everyone together can really take advantage now of their music education and instruction. While we’re teaching online, it’s a great time to really dig in and practice more. Really. Playing music is a great educational, artistic and physical activity that keeps the mind sharp, patience in tact and artistry as a part of our day.
