A sizing chart for violin, viola and cello is a must for music students, teachers and parents.

Violin & Viola

To size a student for the violin or viola, measure the student from the base of their neck to the middle of the left-hand palm. The arm should have some slack and be raised perpendicular at a 45 degree angle. Similarly, to holding a violin or viola. Have the student stand, with their feet shoulder width apart. Use a yard stick or measuring tape. If you have a violin or viola, place the instrument on the student’s left shoulder with the left arm having a little slack. If the fingers can reach or wrap around the scroll, the instrument is a good fit. It’s better for the instrument to be slightly smaller. For viola personalized sizing, slightly smaller is okay.

Cello

Have the student sit down upright in a chair, with their feet flat on the floor. The right rib of the cello should touch the student’s top rib. The C-Peg should be right next to the student’s left ear. Ensure the student can touch all of the finger board with their left hand.

Cello Student Height & Instrument Size

  • < 4 feet = 1/4 Size
  • 4-4.5 feet = 1/2 Size
  • 4.5-5 feet = 3/4 Size
  • > 5 feet = 4/4 Size

Sizing an instrument to correctly fit the student is essential for early musical development and for the early formation of positive posture habits. Correct posture early on, from a correctly sized instrument, will have long-term beneficial results throughout the student’s music education.
