School music teachers and community music schools need to work together more. We are fortunate and grateful that local school band music teachers continue to refer us to their students and parents for private music lessons. Private music lessons are a proven added benefit to a school’s daytime music program. More emphasis and effort towards a collaborative relationship between daytime school music teachers and their community’s local music education counterparts should exist. Here’s why…

  1. Minimal Individual Instructional Time
    1. Most daytime school music programs offer their students little one-to-one instructional time where a student can receive individualized instruction on his or her instrument. Private music lessons and community music schools – that compliment school music programs – can offer students and daytime music teachers a tremendous benefit.
      1. We have a program called Accelerando at Music Notes Academy that can be set-up specifically for a school’s music program. We can implement and tailor instructional methods, repertoire and learning objectives to help students within their school’s music program. All it takes is communication between the daytime school music teacher or music department supervisor and us.
  2. Music Students Benefit With Extra Help
    1. Most daytime music teachers are performance specialists on one or two instruments. Most daytime music teachers attend college as an undergraduate for music education and learn several musical instruments, specifically for teaching music in a classroom environment and setting. For music students, this is not the same as studying with a performer and specialist teacher on a specific instrument. Private music teachers teaching specific instruments at a music school can greatly enhance a daytime music program and its students’ performance skills. This not only helps the students, it helps the daytime music teachers and the school district as a whole. Most of us are aware of the benefits of a music education. A partnership between teachers only helps.
  3. Music School With Music Store Component
    1. At Music Notes Academy we’ve had a music store component since 2006. We found it necessary and convenient for students and parents to know they are purchasing exactly what they need. In many instances, purchasing a musical instrument or accessory from the music teacher’s recommendation is superior to buying from a music store salesperson that is not familiar with the student’s performance abilities or teacher.
      1. Our program Accelerando additionally allows for a school’s music program to individually list exactly which instruments, accessories and instructional books they want their students to purchase for the school year. We will stock approximate quantities of items – instruments, accessories, sheet music and books – so their students can quickly and easily purchase exactly what’s needed right at our East Brunswick Academy.

Having a daytime music program partner with its local community music school is advantageous versus solely a private music teacher. Typically, a community music school will have a Director and staff in place to be able to accommodate a large student body. The music school is far more vested in its community compared to a private music teacher teaching music house to house. The Director would ideally be available and able to manage its staff of music teachers and communicate effectively with the daytime music teacher.

If school music teachers and community music schools can work together more this only strengthens everyone – the school district, the community music school and most importantly the students.
